CREATE A BUG CONTEST

FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!

Keep yourself "buzzy," (busy), with our CREATE A BUG CONTEST. Here's how...

 

  • Each participant makes a bug using the collection of craft materials found in a bag you can pick up at the library during business hours, or at any childrens/teen program.
  • This contest is for patrons age 3 and up. Families may enter as a team.
  • Each participant may make only one bug. You may add any items of your choice to the materials in your bag. Painting, coloring and markers are also allowed.

All creations should be returned to the library no later than July 18th.

Voting will take place at the library from July 21-31. Voting will be done by patrons.

Winners announced on August 1.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

We are working on a blanket to be donated to a disabled veteran in honor of his/her service to all of us.

If you would like to knit a square, please take a pattern and ball of yarn (available at the Circulation Desk).

If you would like to help, but don't knit, please add a ball of red, white or blue yarn to the basket at the Desk.

ADOPT A PLATOON

Avon Grove Library is one of several drop off sites for “Adopt-a-Platoon,” sponsored by the West Grove-Avondale Rotary Club.

Help our troops stationed in Iraq by donating items such as: pre-paid phone cards, magazines (Sports Illustrated, Men’s Health), stationery paper, toiletries, hand sanitizer, boot socks (black or OD green), jerky, power bars, dried fruit, or pre-packaged cheese and crackers.  A complete list is available, posted next to the drop off boxes placed in the main library.

Sewing Workshops

Stitch up a clever creation in the Avon Grove Library’s Sewing Workshops on July 15 to 17! Age-appropriate projects are designed for two groups. From 1:00-2:30pm, those age 9 and up will make pillowcases. From 3:00-4:30pm, those age 12 and up will make pillows. All materials provided. $10 non-refundable material fee. Bring your ideas and creativity! Five students will work as a team to write, script, shoot and edit a 10-minute movie. Each student will take home a copy of the movie on a DVD.

You'll learn how to write a story, create a storyboard, shoot the movie, and edit and burn the movie to DVD. No experience necessary. All equipment and materials provided.

This hands-on science camp at the Avon Grove Library (July 28 through 31) encourages children to explore the wonders of the ocean and sea life. COMPUTER TRAINING AND BASICS

The instructor for the following classes is Colleen A. Owens, a self-taught computer user and trainer with over 20 years of experience. She has been a computer instructor and consultant for the Oxford Area Senior Center for the last 6 years and has provided services to the Kennett Area Senior Center for the last 2 years.

Surfing the Internet will take place on Thursday mornings, July 10, 17 and 24, 10-11:30am and again on Tuesday evenings, July 1, July 8, July 15 6-7:30pm. It is an introductory class covering searching information on the World Wide Web. Learn internet terms, search engines and browsers, as well as how to navigate and search using the address window and search button. Customized searching, organizing Favorites Folder, printing and saving will also be covered.

Introduction to Computers is offered Thursdays, July 10, July 17, July 24, 12:30-2pm. Ideal for beginners! It will cover the basics of computer setup, proper procedures of turning on and shutting down the computer, using the mouse and keyboard. Includes basic instruction on using CD's, floppies and flash drives.

Microsoft Windows classes will meet on Thursdays, July 31, August 7, August 14, August 28 12:30 - 2:00pm. This course covers how to use Microsoft Windows, including how to open, close, move, minimize and maximize windows. Desktop icons, task bar basics and using the recyclebin are also covered.

Email Basics will be held on Thursday mornings, July 31, August 7, August 14, August 28 10:00-11:30am. We will also offer a Tuesday evening class, 6:00 to7:30PM July 22, July 29, August 5, August 12.  This is an introductory course covering requirements for accessing the Internet and signing in or logging on.  Instruction on how to send and receive e-mail with and without attachments and how to use your Address Book will be covered. This course also explains how to reply, forward, print and delete messages. We use Outlook Express but discuss the similarities of other email programs.

 

Microsoft Publisher Basics instruction will be offered on Thursdays, May 15, May 22, June12 and June 19 from 12:30 to 2:00PM. This course covers how to get started using Publisher. Students will learn how to use templates and wizards, as well as the procedures necessary to create publications from scratch. The use of drawing textboxes, adding text and formatting text will also be covered. A general introduction to Desktop Publishing will be included.

A workshop called Internet Job Search will be offered Thursday, July 3 from 10:00 to11:30AM. This course will cover how to search for jobs using the internet.

Another workshop called Saving Files as PDF Files and What is a PDF File will be held Thursday, July 3 from 12:30 to 2:00PM. Learn what a PDF file is and how to save files in this format to share with others.

WEB DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

The instructor for the classes listed below is Barbara Odell, is the owner of Website Design and Images in Landenberg, a web design firm for small businesses andnonprofits since 2000.

 

Wikis and Blogs Thursday, June 12, 6:30 to 7:30pm This class will give an overview of the latest internet trends - Wikis and Blogs. Both of these tools give you an opportunity to build a web presence at no cost. A wiki is a sharable website where you create topic pages and invite people to add content and more pages. Wikis are great for families spread apart and for groups working on a project. A blog is a webpage where you can post information and choose to invite comments. Blogs are now used by businesses to both build credibility and increase their search engine ranking. Come learn via a Powerpoint presentation about these new trends and how you cantakeadvantage of these tools. Slides of the presentation will be available as a handout, and access to a class related webpage will be given where you can find links to resources tostart your own blog and/orwiki.

Did you know that the Chester County Library System Homepage (www.ccls.org) gives you access to a wealth of authoritative information derived from thousands of published documents, scholarly journals, and newspapers? Join us for classes designed to teach the basics of these FREE databases.

who has a Master of Library Science from Clarion University of Pennsylvania.  

 

CONSUMER HEALTH COMPLETE Wednesday, June 4, 6:30 to 7:30pm Want to read up on all the latest alternative treatments for migraines? Or get a profile of the medication that was just prescribed to you? Perhaps you’d like to watch a video or see an illustrated diagram of what will happen during your upcoming knee replacement surgery.Learn how to access to medical databases filled with published health information written by medical professionals. Databases can be accessed at the library or from the comfort of home with a library card number.

 READING ALTERNATIVES: eBOOKS & DOWNLOADABLE AUDIO BOOKS Wednesday June 11 6:30-7:30pm Learn to access netLibrary, a library of electronic books that can be checked out and read right on your computer screen 24 hours a day! The Chester County Public Library System offers electronic media that expands reading options far beyond the printed page.  Participants will learn to access ebooks in the netLibrary database and discover a wealth of free downloadable audio books! Participants should bring any portable media players (mp3 players, cell phones with downloading capability) with the exception of ipods, which are not compatible.

PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER DATABASE Wednesday June 18 6:30 -7:30pm Now at any Chester County Library, you can access full text articles from one of the most respectednewspapers in the region for free! The Philadelphia Inquirer database provides complete full-text content of local and regional news, community events, schools, politics, government policies, cultural activities, local companies, industries and people in the community from 1981 to present. Paid advertisements are excluded. Participants will learn to keyword search the archive of articles for documents on subject areas, specific sections, dates or time periods.

Fun family activity! Come and join us at the Avon Grove Library Tuesday July 8 or Wednesday August 6 to construct your very own bird house. $10 non-refundable material fee. Register in person at the library. Limit 9/per class. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

 

First Aid and CPR for Teens and Adults

For ages 12 and up, learn the vital skills of first aid and CPR. Wednesday July 9 or Tuesday August 5. 4-8:00pm. Register at the library. $45/per person for certification. ICA and OSHA approved.

 

Teens and Adults: Make Beaded Jewelry

Come to the Avon Grove Library Thursday July 17 and "bead-dazzle" your family and friends with jewelry you design! $10 non-refundable material fee. Register in person at the library. Limit 15/per class.
